Gospel: Too Good to Be True… But It Is: Rom 1:16

1–2 minutes

The gospel.

It’s a word we hear all the time—but do we even realize how wild it is?

Back in the day, the Greek word for “gospel” (εὐαγγέλιον) was barely used. It wasn’t common. Why? Because it literally meant something so good, it was almost unbelievable. As in, “too good to be true.”

But here’s the plot twist:

The gospel is true. And it’s the greatest news humanity has ever received.

The Power That Saves

“The gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” — Romans 1:16

This isn’t motivational fluff.

This is rescue.

From what?

  • From being lost (Matt. 18:11)
  • From God’s wrath (Rom. 5:9)
  • From spiritual confusion and darkness (Hos. 4:6; Col. 1:13)
  • From false religion (1 Pet. 2:9)
  • From the weight and penalty of sin

We’ve needed saving since the Garden. Adam and Eve’s sin unplugged humanity from God. From that moment on, we’ve been spiritually dead—disconnected. But deep inside, every person has a craving to be reconnected. We yearn for salvation. We long to be made whole again.

The gospel answers that longing.

What Does It Mean to Believe?

It’s easy to think believing is just a “yes” in your head. But in the Bible, believing is alive. It’s present tense—“is believing”—not “believed once back in 1998.”

Real, saving faith has three dimensions:

  1. Mental – You understand the gospel and who Jesus is (Rom. 10:14–17)
  2. Emotional – You feel the weight of your sin, and the joy of grace (Rom. 6:17)
  3. Volitional – You choose to trust Jesus with your life (Rom. 5:1)

It’s supernatural. Faith is a gift from God, not a mental checklist or a religious badge.

Why This Matters

The gospel doesn’t just improve your life.

It saves your life.

It rescues you from hell, restores your relationship with God, and fills you with purpose. This isn’t insurance for when you die. It’s life-transforming power right now.
