Chasing God’s presence? Where did He go?

1–2 minutes

We often hear phrases like, “Let’s invite God’s presence” or “God really showed up tonight!” But what if we’ve misunderstood something important about the nature of God’s presence?

Scripture makes it clear: God never leaves us. Hebrews 13:5 says, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Jesus Himself promised, “I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). If God never leaves us, why do we sometimes feel distant or disconnected?

The answer lies in our awareness, not His presence. Imagine sitting next to someone in silence. They’re present, but until you engage—turning toward them, speaking, or listening—you might barely notice their presence. Similarly, we often miss the fact that God is always with us, simply because our minds are focused elsewhere.

Worship, prayer, and music don’t make God arrive; they help us tune in to His ongoing presence. They remind us to become attentive to the reality that He’s already here. Think about it: when your favorite song plays or when someone prays passionately, your heart and mind refocus. You suddenly “feel” God’s presence, not because He just showed up, but because you became aware.

This realization changes our approach entirely. Instead of striving for God to “come,” we simply need to turn our attention to the One who already dwells within us (Colossians 1:27). It liberates us from performance anxiety in worship and prayer. You’re not inviting a distant God to show up; you’re acknowledging the ever-present One who’s been with you all along.

Next time you feel distant, pause and remind yourself: God hasn’t moved—your awareness has. Take a moment to refocus. He’s right here, right now.
