You’ve probably heard this line before: “Those who sow in tears will reap in joy.” Thats from Psalm 126:5.
It’s thrown around by preachers in churches and it sounds spiritual, right? But let’s pause and unpack that for a second—because if we’re not careful, we might end up wrapping legalism in a nice, emotional-sounding bow.
Here’s the deal: if you think you’re blessed because you cried, fasted, or sowed with enough emotional pain, then you’re basically saying your tears were the currency for your breakthrough.
And that… is a big problem.
Why?
Because that mindset shifts the glory from Jesus to you. Suddenly, it’s not His finished work that got you the promise—it’s your effort, your sacrifice, your tears. That’s not grace. That’s performance. And it doesn’t belong in the new covenant.
What’s the Foundation of Your Blessing?
Let’s get one thing clear: You are blessed because of Jesus. Period!
Paul doesn’t say in Ephesians, “You are blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because you sowed faithfully in hard seasons and cried enough tears.” Nope. He says:
“We are blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.” (Eph 1:3)
That means healing, provision, peace, wisdom, favor—literally everything that pertains to life and godliness—has already been given to us because of what Jesus did. Not because of what we did.
It’s not tears, it’s not fasting, it’s not even your “level” of holiness. It’s grace.
Faith in the Name – Not Faith in Yourself
In Acts 3, Peter heals a lame man, and everyone’s freaking out about it. What does Peter say? “Hey, don’t look at me like it was my holiness or my power that made this guy walk.” Instead, he points it back to faith in the name of Jesus.
That’s huge.
If anyone could’ve taken credit, it would’ve been Peter—he was healing people, casting out demons, preaching like a boss. But even he says, “It wasn’t me. It was Jesus.”
So why are we still trying to add our tears, our effort, and our emotions to the finished work of the cross?
Tears Aren’t the Seed—Jesus Was
Here’s the truth: Jesus already sowed in tears. He sowed His life. He fulfilled the law. He carried our pain. He fasted. He wept. He obeyed fully. He bled.
And now? We reap in joy.
Not because we’ve done something to deserve it, but because He did everything. And our role is not to strive, but to believe. To access all that’s already been given by grace, through faith.
So next time someone says, “You gotta sow in tears to see your breakthrough,” kindly remind them:
“Hey, we’re about 2000 years late—Jesus already sowed in tears. I’m just living in the joy of what He finished.”
Final Thoughts
God is not moved by tears. He’s moved by faith. Not faith in your ability to cry, but faith in His Son.
So don’t fall for spiritual-sounding performance traps. Don’t let legalism steal the joy Jesus died to give you.
You’re not sowing to earn. You’re reaping what Christ already paid for—with joy, not striving.
