We HAVE, Not Shall Overcome: 1 John 5:4-5

3–5 minutes

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1 John 5:4-5)

Every believer is already a conqueror—Yes! The moment you had faith in Christ Jesus, you have won a victory that no world or its systems can defeat.

Victory by Faith

How did we become victorious? It’s through faith. Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, and by faith we receive everything God has provided by grace. When you are saved by faith, you aren’t still fighting for victory—you are already part of Christ’s conquering victory. He has given you everything he has won, and in fact you are sitting with Him at the heavenlies!

Christian life is all about living in victory and sharing that victory with others. Whether it is every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3), whether it’s healing (by His stripes we are healed), prosperity, or righteousness, we are living proof that faith in Jesus conquers the world.

Walking in Victory

How do we walk in victory? Walking in victory isn’t about straining to “earn” success; it’s about living out the blessings and identity that God has given us. Romans 12 teaches us that when we live by faith, we are also proving the will of God through our actions. It doesn’t matter what your past was—what matters is who you have become, because it says here “whatever is born of God”. As long as you are a “whatever” and born again, you are a conqueror. Every person born of God overcomes the world, regardless of its systems, its plans, or its challenges.

So stop using that negative world language! I am a person of colour and I have decided I will never blame “systemic racism” and walk in anger. I am not systemically moving towards defeat, but because I am a child of God, I am systemically moving higher and higher. Daniel prospered in a world different to his, which was against everything he stood for. Yet, he prospered. David walked into the battlefield, and everything, his training, his family was not on his side, but he conquered. How did they both do it? By faith. No circumstance—be it related to your race, gender, or background—can thwart God’s purpose for you. Once you’re an overcomer in Christ Jesus, that victory is secure.

The One Who Conquered Responds with Love

In these verses concept of overcoming is intricately linked with love. An overcomer’s response to life’s challenges is to love. When people hurt us or throw insults our way, our true strength is displayed when we respond with love rather than bitterness. Remember Jesus’ example—even when He was mistreated, He responded with love, focused on the victory rather than the pain, and He won them. This is the most powerful testimony of our faith.

When we really live out love, we’re totally winning! I remember back in school when people would make fun of me, and I’d be upset, but then I discovered this awesome trick: just laugh with them! As I got older, I found out that not only laughing but also saying something nice back can dismantle the aggressor. It’s hard for people to be rude when love them. But please understand that you can only laugh at yourself if you’re secure in who you are in Christ. Once you really get that you’re complete in Him, responding out of anger just isn’t gonna happen. Love them back. Hit hate with love. That was Jesus’s in Matthew 5.

Show me a believer walking in love, and I will show you a man walking in victory.

Love Has Won

People who come at us, hate us for being Christians, do so because that is what is natural to them. Do not be surprised. However, when we respond in our victory suit, the love of Christ, we win people over.

Final Thoughts

If you believe that Jesus is the Son of God, then you are already victorious. Your faith is the key that unlocks God’s power to overcome any obstacle. Walk in that victory daily by walking in love. Embrace every spiritual blessing and let love guide your interactions. When challenges arise, remember that overcoming isn’t about your own efforts—it’s about living in the victory that Christ secured for you. An we access our victory flag by taking the banner of love and waving it to people.

Once an overcomer, always an overcomer. No matter what the world throws at you, you remain blessed and empowered in Christ Jesus. Walk in your victory and let your faith shine as a beacon of hope and love in a world that desperately needs it.
