Delivered Once and for All: The Gospel vs Deliverance Culture

3–5 minutes

I recently saw a great post on Facebook, and it reminded me of something I experienced years ago.

I was attending a church in Europe at the time, and the pastor organized a three-day retreat. Overall, it was good. But the last day felt… strange.

We were handed out questionnaires.

They asked things like:

  • Were your parents Christians?
  • What about your grandparents?
  • Did anyone in your family ever practice other religions?
  • Did you ever do this or that?

I remember feeling genuinely confused.

So I went up to the pastor and said something like:

“Pastor, honestly, my parents probably 20 generations ago were Hindus. I have no idea. But how does that matter? I’m born again.”

He didn’t really engage the question. He just tersely told me to fill out the form.

Later that same day, we were all led into a session where we were told to renounce our past and basically I had walked into a deliverance ministry.

That moment stuck with me.

Because here’s the real question:

If someone is truly born again… what exactly are we delivering them from?

Why Paul Didn’t Send the Ephesians for Deliverance

This is where Scripture becomes incredibly practical.

The believers Paul wrote to in Epistle to the Ephesians were the same people who publicly burned their occult books in Acts of the Apostles 19.

These weren’t casual church attendees.

They were former idol worshipers.
Former occult practitioners.
People with serious spiritual baggage.

If anyone “qualified” for modern deliverance ministry, it was them.

Yet when Paul writes to them, he never tells them to:

  • attend deliverance sessions
  • break generational curses
  • renounce ancestors
  • hunt demons
  • repeat special prayers

Not once.

Why?

Because Paul believed the gospel actually works.

The Gospel Already Did the Delivering

Paul doesn’t focus on casting demons out of believers. He focuses on identity.

He doesn’t tell them to get free.
He tells them who they already are.

Instead of spiritual rituals, Paul teaches them:

  • their position in Christ
  • what Jesus accomplished
  • how to renew their minds
  • how to put off old thinking
  • how to walk in their new life

Freedom doesn’t come through ceremonies. Freedom comes through understanding.

When someone believes the gospel, they are transferred out of darkness and into God’s kingdom (see Colossians 1:13).

That’s not partial freedom.

That’s total.

The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus didn’t start a process. It finished one.

Standing Firm, Not Fighting for Freedom

Yes — demons are real. Scripture says the enemy looks for opportunities to devour.

But notice how he works: through deception.

That’s why Paul emphasizes renewing the mind.

The enemy doesn’t have ownership rights over believers.
He works through lies and false beliefs.

Once you understand the finished work of Jesus, those lies lose their grip.

You don’t fight for freedom. You stand in freedom.

No Legal Claims Left Against You

Here’s the simple truth:

Every charge against you was canceled at the cross (Colossians 2).

Not some.
Not most.
All.

Which means:

  • no spiritual paperwork is pending
  • no curses remain active
  • no demons have legal authority over you
  • no special rituals are required

Jesus holds all authority.

You don’t need:

  • mystical prayers
  • special practitioners
  • secret knowledge
  • spiritual mapping
  • long deliverance sessions

You need truth.

And truth produces rest.

How the Enemy Still Tries to Work

If Satan has no legal claim, how does he still influence people?

Through deception.

Through doctrines that magnify darkness instead of Christ.
Through teachings that quietly suggest Jesus didn’t finish the job.
Through systems that keep believers chasing freedom instead of enjoying it.

But when your mind aligns with what Jesus already accomplished, those lies stop landing.

The more you grow in truth, the less room there is for fear-based theology.

Want to Walk in the Freedom You Already Have?

It starts here:

  • Believe who you are in Christ
  • Believe how God sees you
  • Believe the enemy is defeated

That’s it.

Freedom isn’t something you earn.
It’s something you recognize.

The gospel already delivered you.

Final Thoughts: Trust the Finished Work

Jesus didn’t die so we could live in spiritual maintenance mode.

He died so we could be free.

So don’t follow teachings that quietly imply Christ’s work was incomplete.

Believe the gospel.
Rest in His victory.
Walk in your new identity.

You were delivered the moment you believed.

Now live like it.

  1. Thanks for the excellent articles. I’ve enjoyed a number of them. It is a great service to the body of Christ for you to articulate with such clarity and truth.

On this topic, I would submit that deliverance is the Gospel of Jesus Christ – it’s how we actually experience freedom. Jesus modeled it and the disciples and early church practiced it to great effect. In fact, it was the believers’ “demonstrated authority over the forces of darkness” that was primarily responsible for the Gospel’s great success in converting much of the Roman world.

Jesus died for the sins of the whole world, but that did not instantaneously and automatically free everyone from sin and save them from Hell. The truth has to be received and applied for it to be effective. Excedrin can claim that it relieves all headaches, but I have to actually take it to realize those benefits. Similarly, our freedom must be received, confessed, and proclaimed and the authority of Christ employed in the manner Christ demonstrated in casting out demons.

Finally, the universe is a Kingdom which, like any other government is based on laws and legal rights and obligations. The Satanic realm claims rights against each of us because through Adam we are slaves of sin and Satan.

“He who sleeps on his rights loses them.” This is a fundamental legal doctrine even today. Rights must be asserted in open court for them to be recognized and enforced in any jurisdiction.

The Enemy steals, kills, and destroys in the lives of believers because it has been granted rights against each of us through not only Adam, but through the sins, and demonic covenants and agreements of our ancestors after Adam, just as the destruction of Judah and Jerusalem was due to the unrepented and cumulative sins of the people of Israel and their ancestors.

Once those sins are confessed and agreements renounced, the casting out of the spirits is often anti-climactic and almost a pro forma exercise.

    Blessings!

This article is spot on and it very much is close to a family situation where someone strongly believes in generational curses, witchcraft, freemasonry etc and believes that they need to fight it everyday and spends many hours every day doing it. So when I read about Satan working through deception it’s all delusional. Thank you very. Much for speaking truth.

    1. Hallelujah!
