Why You Should Give, Not Tithe: Rom 15:26

3–5 minutes

Romans 15:26 is easy to skip over, but it reveals a massive lesson about generosity in the New Testament.

Paul writes:

“For Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem.”

The key word is “pleased.”

In Greek, Paul uses εὐδοκέω (eudokeō) —
a word loaded with meaning:

eudokeō = delighted, deeply willing, joyfully satisfied

This was not:

  • forced giving
  • calculated obligation
  • tithing requirement
  • guilt trip
  • fundraising pitch
  • emotional pressure
  • fear of curses
  • “sow a seed to get a blessing”

This was joy.

A joy that comes from grace.

2. Grace Creates Joyful Generosity

Grace doesn’t say:

  • “Give, or you are robbing God.”
  • “Give, or you won’t be blessed.”
  • “Give, or you’ll be cursed.”
  • “Give, or God won’t protect your finances.”

That is the language of fear, not the gospel.

Grace says:

  • “You are blessed.” → so you bless.
  • “You are rich in Christ.” → so you give.
  • “You are secure.” → so you share.
  • “You are loved.” → so you love.”

The Gentile believers weren’t paying God back.
They weren’t earning favor.
They weren’t bribing God for prosperity.
They weren’t anxiously trying to “keep their blessing.”

They were simply expressing the unity of Christ’s Body.

3. Paul Never Used Fear to Motivate Giving

In the modern church world, many giving sermons use:

  • fear
  • threats
  • coercion
  • manipulation
  • transactional promises
  • prosperity formulas
  • “unlock your next level” language
  • “break the curse” tones

But Paul’s writings stand in total contrast to this.

Look at his teaching:

1. Giving is voluntary.

“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion.”
—2 Corinthians 9:7

2. Giving must be cheerful.

“For God loves a cheerful giver.”
—2 Corinthians 9:7

3. Giving starts with grace, not law.

“They gave themselves first to the Lord… and then by the will of God to us.”
—2 Corinthians 8:5

4. Giving reflects the generosity of Christ.

“Though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor.”
—2 Corinthians 8:9

5. Giving is never manipulated.

Notice Paul NEVER says:

  • “If you don’t give, you’ll be cursed.”
  • “If you don’t tithe, your finances will collapse.”
  • “If you sow into this anointing, God will breakthrough for you.”
  • “If you don’t give, God won’t bless you.”

Those are human-made fear tactics.

Paul speaks the language of freedom and love.

4. New Testament Generosity Is Rooted in the Body of Christ, Not in the Tithing Law

In Romans 15:26, the Gentile churches were giving to Jerusalem.

Why?

Not because:

  • they owed a tithe
  • Jerusalem “covered” them spiritually
  • they wanted God to open heaven
  • they were afraid of losing blessings
  • Paul pressured them

But because they recognized:

1. One Body

The Jewish believers blessed the Gentiles spiritually →
the Gentiles blessed them materially (Rom 15:27).

2. One Family

Their giving was relational, not transactional.

3. One Gospel

This was unity in action—Jews and Gentiles caring for one another.

This is why Paul says:

“They were pleased to do so.”
(Romans 15:26)

Not scared.
Not threatened.
Not pressured.
Not manipulated.

Pleased.
Joyful.
Honored.
Delighted.

5. Fear-Based Giving Produces Anxiety. Grace-Based Giving Produces Joy.

Fear says:

  • “If you miss a tithe, trouble is coming.”
  • “If you give more, God will bless more.”
  • “If you don’t help this ministry, blood is on your hands.”
  • “If you don’t sow this seed, you’ll miss your miracle.”

Grace says:

  • “You already have everything in Christ.” (Eph 1:3)
  • “God supplies all your needs.” (Phil 4:19)
  • “You give because you’re overflowing.” (2 Cor 8:2)
  • “Your giving is worship, not leverage.” (Rom 12:1)

Fear enslaves.
Grace liberates.

And liberated hearts become generous hearts.

6. Paul’s Model of Giving Is Beautifully Simple

1. It’s voluntary.

No compulsion (2 Cor 9:7).

2. It’s joyful.

Pleasure, not pressure (Rom 15:26).

3. It’s grace-driven.

Rooted in Christ’s generosity (2 Cor 8:9).

4. It’s relational.

One Body caring for another (Rom 15:27).

5. It’s Spirit-led.

Not law-driven, not guilt-driven.

6. It’s outward-focused.

Generosity flows because we are blessed, not to become blessed.

7. Final Reflection: New Covenant Giving Is a Celebration, Not a Threat

Romans 15:26 gives us a picture of generosity free from:

  • guilt
  • manipulation
  • duty
  • fear
  • tithing legalism
  • prosperity formulas

Paul shows us a New Covenant way:

Joyful, willing, delighted generosity—because of grace.

The Gentiles in Macedonia and Achaia didn’t give to get blessed.
They gave because they were already blessed in Christ (Eph 1:3).

They didn’t give to secure God’s favor.
They gave because they already had God’s favor.

And that is the kind of generosity the New Testament celebrates.
