“And without faith it is impossible to please God.” — Hebrews 11:6
“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross…” — Hebrews 12:2
Hebrews 11:6 is one of the most-quoted verses in the Bible. We hear it in sermons, read it in devotionals, and take it as motivation to “have more faith.” But if you’ve ever wondered where that faith comes from — the very next chapter gives the answer:
It’s not your faith.
It’s His faith.
1. The Faith That Pleases God Comes from God
When the writer of Hebrews says “without faith it is impossible to please God,” he’s not demanding that you create faith. He’s reminding you that faith itself comes from God.
Faith is not self-generated effort or emotional strength; it’s a divine gift that flows from Christ Himself.
“…God has dealt to each one the measure of faith.” — Romans 12:3
Grammatically, it can mean either the or “a” measure of faith. However, when you look at the context in this verse (Check God Has Allotted to Each the Same “Measure Of Faith” : Rom 12:3), we see that it is about homogeneity rather than everyone having different measures. God didn’t give one believer a stronger faith and another a weaker one. He gave the same faith, sourced in Jesus, to every believer at salvation.
2. Jesus — The Author and Finisher of Our Faith
Hebrews 12:2 tells us exactly who started this faith and who completes it:
“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…” — Hebrews 12:2
The Greek word for author (archēgos) means “originator” or “pioneer.”
The word for finisher (teleiōtēs) means “perfecter” or “completer.”
Faith begins with Jesus and is perfected by Jesus.
He authored it through His life, and He finished it through the cross.
So when you operate in faith, you are simply participating in His own faith — the faith of the Son of God living in you.
“The life I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” — Galatians 2:20 (KJV)
You don’t need to struggle to “believe harder.” You just need to rest in the One whose faith is already at work inside you.
3. The Same Faith That Was in Jesus Is in You
The apostles understood this truth clearly. Peter wrote:
“To those who have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ.” — 2 Peter 1:1
That means the same faith that Peter used to walk on water, heal the sick, and raise the dead is the exact same faith you received when you were born again.
There aren’t “levels” of faith — only levels of renewed understanding about what’s already in you.
Paul says this in Romans 12:3 — God dealt “the measure of faith” to each believer. Peter says it’s the same precious faith.And Galatians 2:20 reveals its source: the faith of Jesus Christ Himself.
4. His Faith Still Works Through Us
After healing the lame man at the temple gate, Peter explained what happened:
“And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.” — Acts 3:16
Did you catch that?
The faith that healed the man came through Jesus.
Even the miracle-working faith wasn’t something Peter drummed up. It was the faith of Christ flowing through him.
That same faith is still active today — in every believer who allows Christ to live through them.
5. Faith Isn’t Something You Try to Have — It’s Something You Already Have
When you believed the gospel, you didn’t produce faith.
You responded to the Word — and that Word carried the power to believe.
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” — Romans 10:17
His Word produces His faith in you.
That’s why Paul says in Philemon 1:6:
“That the sharing of your faith may become effective by the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.”
Faith becomes effective when you acknowledge (recognize, agree with) what is already true about you in Christ.
The more your mind renews to that truth, the more effortlessly faith flows.
6. The Faith That Pleases God Is the Faith of His Son
So when Hebrews 11:6 says,
“Without faith it is impossible to please God,”
it doesn’t mean God is demanding performance.
It means you cannot please God apart from Christ, because only Christ’s faith perfectly fulfills what God desires.
The good news is — that same faith now lives in you.
God is already pleased with you because He sees the faith of His Son operating in your spirit. You’re not trying to earn His approval; you’re living from His approval.
7. The Finished Work Makes Faith Effortless
Everything required to please God was completed at the cross.
Jesus endured the shame, finished the work, and sat down at the right hand of the Father (Hebrews 12:2).
That’s why faith is no longer about striving — it’s about resting.
When you rest in what Jesus has finished, His faith flows through you like a river.
Faith is not something you do; it’s something you live from.
It’s His life expressed through yours.
“For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” — Philippians 2:13
Final Thought
You are not called to live by your faith in Christ but by the faith of Christ in you.
“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…” — Hebrews 12:2
The faith that pleases God is the faith that originated in Jesus, was perfected in Jesus, and now operates in you through His Spirit.
Stop trying to have faith.
Start resting in the One whose faith never fails.
It’s His faith — not yours.
