Romans 1:19–20 (NASB):
“Because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”
This is a staggering statement. According to Paul, every human being on earth has already seen enough to know that there is a God. That’s how plain and undeniable the general revelation of God is.
The Evidence Is Built In
Paul’s argument is simple, yet piercing: God has made Himself known through what He has made. Creation is not silent. It speaks. Loudly.
“That which is known about God is evident within them… because God made it evident to them.” — Romans 1:19
Every person carries within them a conscience and a moral compass. But not only that — we also carry an innate sense of “there is something more.” That’s not an accident. It’s divine design.
Even in scientific circles, questions about the Big Bang eventually hit a metaphysical wall: “What caused the bang?” In evolutionary biology, scientists may explain how species adapt over time — but the origin of life, the initial spark, remains an open question. Every worldview eventually runs into the unexplainable, and that’s where the evidence of God shouts loudest.
General Revelation: The Signature of the Creator
Look at the molecular level — the complexity of DNA, cellular machinery, the precision of proteins — and it screams of design. Zoom out to the galactic scale — planetary orbits, gravitational harmony, the fine-tuned constants of the universe — and you see fingerprints of divine genius.
Paul says this general revelation reveals two things clearly:
- His Eternal Power – Creation is sustained by something infinite and uncontainable.
- His Divine Nature – There’s order, beauty, intentionality, and wisdom behind it all.
We may not see the name of Jesus written in the stars, but we unmistakably see the hand of God. And that’s the point. The witness of creation is enough to spark a curiosity, to stir hearts to seek Him (Acts 17:27).
Why Atheism Is Not Just Doubt — It’s Suppression
Atheism doesn’t just reject a proposition; it suppresses what is already known. It’s not merely intellectual resistance — it’s often the willful refusal to acknowledge the obvious (Romans 1:18).
That’s why I believe atheism is more dangerous than other religions or idolatries. While false gods are still wrong, at least they acknowledge something divine exists. But atheism, like Babel, declares: “We don’t need God at all.”
In Babel, humanity said, “Let us make a name for ourselves.” That’s what atheism does. It removes God from the equation, not just as Savior, but as Creator, Sustainer, and Lord.
And that, Paul says, is why they are without excuse (Romans 1:20).
Modern Distractions, Ancient Problem
While ancient man suppressed truth with idols and false religion, modern man suppresses it with:
- Endless scrolls and social media
- Busyness and hustle culture
- Self-help mantras and humanistic optimism
All these things numb the ache, distract from the evidence, and deaden the soul’s search for God. But the consequence is the same: the wrath of God is revealed (Romans 1:18), and people are given over to what they pursue (Romans 1:24–28).
The Illusion of Autonomy
As Paul J. Achtemeier writes:
“We are to be under no illusions in this matter. It is not a question of whether or not we are to have a lord over us. As creatures, we have no choice in the matter. The only question is, What sort of lordship will it be? Whatever lordship it is—wealth, male chauvinism, feminism, racism—it will claim us as its own and use us to our own destruction in its malevolent purposes.”

Final Word: We All Have a Lord
Whether it’s self, sin, success, or social movements, something will rule us. The only true freedom comes not from rejecting God, but from surrendering to Him.
Creation is speaking. Will we listen?
There is no such thing as neutral ground. Either we bow to the God who made us, or we’ll be ruled by lesser things that ultimately destroy us.
And in the end, no one will have an excuse.
