The Hall of Faith: The Elect Who Believed: Heb 11 and Rom 9-11

3–5 minutes

Hebrews 11 is often called the Hall of Faith — a list of spiritual giants who trusted God against all odds. We read of Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, and many others whose faith shaped redemptive history.

But what if we’ve misunderstood what made them who they were?
What if their faith wasn’t the cause of their righteousness — but the result of God’s grace and election?

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
— Hebrews 11:1

Faith is not human achievement. It’s the response of a heart awakened by grace.

The Elect Before Christ

Romans 9–11 explains that before Christ, only the elect believed — those whom God chose by grace to preserve His redemptive plan.

Paul writes:

“At the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works.” — Romans 11:5–6

This remnant existed long before Israel — beginning with Abel, who offered a better sacrifice by faith because his heart was already opened by grace.
Each person listed in Hebrews 11 was part of that same remnant. They didn’t believe to become chosen; they believed because they were chosen.

Grace First, Faith Second, Righteousness Follows

The order never changes:

  1. Grace calls.
  2. Faith responds.
  3. Righteousness follows.

Let’s see how this pattern runs through the entire chapter.

Abel — The Elected Worshiper

“By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain…” — Hebrews 11:4

Abel didn’t offer better because he was naturally good; he offered by faith — the faith that comes only through grace.
Grace had already touched Abel’s heart. That’s why his sacrifice was accepted — not because it was perfect, but because it was born from a heart God had chosen.

Enoch — The Elect Who Walked with God

“By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death…” — Hebrews 11:5

Enoch walked with God because grace enabled him to. His walk wasn’t the reason for God’s favor; it was the result of it.

Noah — The Elect Preserved by Grace

“By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark…” — Hebrews 11:7

As we saw earlier, Noah found grace before he was ever called righteous. He believed because grace had already chosen him.

Abraham — The Chosen Who Believed

“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out…” — Hebrews 11:8

Abraham didn’t obey and then become chosen. He was called first — chosen out of Ur by grace — and that call awakened faith.
That’s why Paul says, “It was credited to him as righteousness.” Righteousness followed faith, and faith followed grace.

Sarah — The Elect Who Received Strength to Believe

“By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive…” — Hebrews 11:11

Sarah’s faith didn’t begin in her willpower. It began when grace touched her unbelieving heart and enabled her to trust in the One who promised.

Moses — The Chosen Deliverer

“By faith Moses refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter…” — Hebrews 11:24

Moses didn’t renounce Egypt by self-effort. Grace had already chosen him for a divine purpose. His faith to forsake comfort came from the One who had already set him apart before birth.

Rahab — The Gentile Elect by Grace

“By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient…” — Hebrews 11:31

Rahab believed because grace reached even into the walls of Jericho to awaken faith in a woman no one would have chosen.
God’s election broke through barriers of ethnicity and morality — showing that His grace was never confined to Israel alone.

The Common Thread

From Abel to Rahab, the pattern remains:
Each believed because grace had already worked within them.
Each was declared righteous after faith — but that faith itself was the evidence of being chosen.

Their faith was not a spiritual achievement to boast in; it was a sign that God had already called, preserved, and purposed them.

Before Christ and Now in Christ

Before Christ, faith was limited to the elect — those through whom God carried forward His promise. But in Christ, that same grace is now open to all.

What was once a remnant chosen by grace has become an open invitation:

“Whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16

The elect before Christ foreshadowed the believers after Christ.
Their faith pointed forward to His finished work; our faith points back to it.
But both come from the same source — grace that calls, awakens, and sustains.

In short:

  • The heroes of Hebrews 11 believed because they were chosen by grace.
  • Their righteousness followed their faith, and their faith followed election.
  • Before Christ, only the elect believed; now in Christ, all who believe enter that same grace.
  • The Hall of Faith is not a list of human achievers — it’s a record of divine grace at work in ordinary hearts.
