Have you ever noticed how some people preach in the streets — not out of love, but out of frustration? I’ve heard it. Maybe you have too. Someone with a megaphone shouting about how another religion is “taking over,” how we’re “losing our culture,” and how “we need to fight back.” But when I hear that, I can’t help but wonder: Is that really evangelism? Or is it just cultural panic dressed up in religious language?
Let’s go back to Paul.
Paul Didn’t Preach Because He Felt Threatened
Paul traveled across the Roman Empire — a world filled with idol worship, pagan rituals, emperor cults, and philosophies that had nothing to do with Jesus. Romans had occupied parts of Israel too. He didn’t scream that they were ruining Jewish culture. He didn’t protest temples. He didn’t complain that Rome was becoming too secular.
He preached because he loved them.
He knew that all those idols and belief systems couldn’t save. They were blind paths. And Paul — even after being stoned, imprisoned, and ridiculed — kept going, because he genuinely cared that people were lost.
Today’s Street Preaching Sometimes Misses the Heart
Let’s be honest. Sometimes what’s called “evangelism” today feels more like a culture war than a rescue mission. Instead of tears, there’s yelling. Instead of compassion, there’s frustration. Instead of a gospel of grace, there’s a sermon about how our way of life is under attack.
But the Gospel is not about defending our culture. It’s about announcing His kingdom.
The Kingdom Is Bigger Than Culture
The early church didn’t try to preserve a Judeo-Roman culture. They proclaimed a kingdom not of this world. The church grew — not by clinging to familiar customs — but by laying down rights, loving enemies, and pointing to Jesus.
When we preach because we want to “protect our way of life,” we’ve missed the point. The Gospel isn’t here to preserve the West — it’s here to save the world.
Let’s Get Back to Paul’s Heart
If we truly believe other religions can’t save, we shouldn’t be angry — we should be brokenhearted. Not because our town looks different. Not because stores don’t play Christmas carols anymore. But because people are trying to find hope without Jesus — and we know where hope actually lives.
Evangelism is never about defending comfort zones. It’s about loving people enough to want eternity for them.
Let’s Preach With Compassion, Not Panic
So yes, let’s share the Gospel boldly. Let’s speak truth. But let’s check our hearts. Are we doing it to protect “how things used to be”? Or are we doing it because Jesus really is the only way, and we don’t want anyone left behind?
Because yelling at the culture isn’t going to save anyone. But showing them Jesus just might.
