Is there such a thing as “too much grace”?

2–3 minutes

“If what you’re saying is true, then what’s stopping someone from just go and commit adultery?”

It’s a question I’ve heard before. Usually, it’s not about the person asking—it’s about “those other Christians.”

People worry: If grace is really that free, won’t believers take advantage of it? Won’t they just do whatever they want?

What do you really want?

But here’s the twist: what if doing whatever we want is actually the point—because God has changed what we want?

The Bible says we’ve been given new hearts (Romans 6:17). Not cleaned-up versions of our old ones—but completely transformed, obedient hearts. We’ve been rewired. God works in us not only to act, but to want what He wants (Philippians 2:13).

If grace was without the changed heart, it would have been different. However, we are New Creations, in Christ Jesus, endowed with grace. We have had a heart transplant!

We don’t like sin

When we sin, something inside us aches. It’s not who we are anymore. We feel the misalignment. Why? Because we’re now allergic to sin and addicted to Jesus (Romans 6:11). It’s who we are. We’ve been fused with Christ—bonded to Him forever—and even our struggles prove it.

You can try to sin and enjoy it, but good luck. You’ll either be miserable in sin or fulfilled in Christ—but either way, you’ll prove you belong to Him (Romans 6:18).

Too much grace? Not preached enough!

So when someone’s afraid of “too much grace,” it’s often because they’re seeing grace as just forgiveness. But grace isn’t just about wiping the slate clean—it’s about writing a brand-new story on your heart.

Yes, grace is a “get out of jail free” card. But it’s also a “get a new heart for free” card. That’s the kind of grace that empowers, transforms, and satisfies.

When the sky’s the limit—when you’re totally free—what do you really want?
If Jesus has made His home in you, you already know the answer.

“The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.”
— Hebrews 7:18–19
