Does Grace empower you to keep the Law?

2–3 minutes

One of the greatest misunderstandings in Christian circles is the idea that grace somehow enables us to keep the law better—that somehow it helps us to keep the law.

Let’s be clear: Grace is not a divine law-keeping enabler.

Some claim that grace empowers us to uphold the standards of the law even more strictly. But let’s pause for a moment and consider just how serious the law actually was.

The Weight of the Law: A Man and His Sticks

In Numbers 15, a man was found picking up sticks on the Sabbath. It doesn’t seem like a big deal today, but under the law, this was considered a desecration of the Sabbath—a direct violation of God’s command.

And what did the law require?

“Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must be put to death.” (Exodus 31:14)

And again:

“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘The man must surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.’” (Numbers 15:35)

And they did.

Now, here’s the question: Now that you are under grace, how is it that you are planing on keeping this law?

Grace Operates on a Different System

But that’s not what grace is for.

The law is not of faith.” (Galatians 3:12)

“If a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law.” (Galatians 3:21)

The law demands. Grace supplies. The law condemns. Grace redeems. The law requires righteousness. Grace gives righteousness.

Grace works through faith, not effort. It doesn’t empower your flesh to meet divine standards. Instead, it enables the life of Christ in you to flourish.

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” (Galatians 2:20)

You are not living under a system of do’s and don’ts. You are living in union with a Person—Jesus Himself. And His life in you produces the fruit of the Spirit:

”…against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:23)

Life Comes From Christ, Not the Law

There is no life in the law. None. But Christ’s life in us is more than enough for everything we face.

Grace doesn’t help you become a better law-keeper. It teaches you to rest in Christ, to trust His work, and to let His life be expressed through you.

So don’t fall for the subtle lie that grace just helps you keep the law better. Grace takes you out of the law entirely, and places you into the glorious freedom of life in Christ.

And that’s more than enough.
