“God Is Doing a New Thing”: But Didn’t He Already?

2–3 minutes

You’ve probably heard this phrase from pulpits and conference stages:

“God is doing a new thing!”

It’s often followed by declarations of revival, breakthrough, or some unprecedented move of God that we all need to catch before it passes.

It sounds exciting… but is it biblical?

Let’s explore where this phrase comes from, how it’s often misunderstood, and what the New Covenant teaches about what God has already done.

The Famous Verse: Isaiah 43:19

“Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it?”

This verse is beautiful, and it’s often quoted as a promise that God is about to do something fresh or unexpected.

But here’s the thing: this was a prophecy about Israel’s deliverance from Babylon—looking forward to redemption and ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

It’s not a cyclical slogan for every calendar year.

The Real New Thing Has Already Happened

The biggest “new thing” God ever did wasn’t a new movement—it was a new covenant.

“This cup is the new covenant in My blood…” — Luke 22:20

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17

The resurrection of Jesus ushered in a new creation, not just a new season.

He gave us a new heart (Ezekiel 36:26), a new spirit, and made us the temple of God. That’s not seasonal hype—it’s eternal reality.

What’s the Problem with Saying “God Is Doing a New Thing”?

  1. It implies what God already did isn’t enough.
As if we need a new version of Jesus, or the cross wasn’t sufficient to transform.
  2. It sets up false expectations.
People wait for God to “move,” rather than walking in what He’s already accomplished.
  3. It leads to spiritual FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out).
It makes people anxious, thinking they’re missing the “latest move” of God.

The Gospel Isn’t Seasonal

We don’t need a new move.
We need to believe the finished work.

“He has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.” — Ephesians 1:3

“His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness…” — 2 Peter 1:3

You’re not waiting for God to move—you’re walking in what He already did.

But Isn’t God Always Doing Something?

Absolutely. God is always working (John 5:17), but it’s not something new—it’s the outworking of what’s already been fulfilled in Christ.

He’s not updating the software every year.

He’s building on the eternal foundation of Jesus.

Let’s Be Careful With Prophetic Hype

When someone says, “God is doing a new thing,” ask:

  • Is it consistent with the Gospel?
  • Does it point to Jesus or a person/platform?
  • Does it rely on emotion or truth?

Often, the “new thing” is just a rebranded event, an emotional high, or vague momentum used to stir excitement. But it rarely leads people deeper into the sufficiency of Christ.

🙌 Final Thought

God already did the “new thing.” He crucified the old man, raised us up in Christ, and seated us with Him in heavenly places.

That’s not temporary—it’s eternal.

Instead of chasing what’s new, let’s rest in what’s finished.
