In Galatians 4:17–18, Paul writes:
“They eagerly seek you, not commendably, but they wish to shut you out so that you will seek them. But it is good always to be eagerly sought in a commendable manner—and not only when I am present with you.”
This verse gives us a peek behind the curtain.
The legalists in Galatia weren’t just pushing religious rules because they cared deeply for the people. They weren’t truly shepherding—they were recruiting. They were more interested in followers than in fellowship.
It Still Happens Today
Let’s be honest. Sometimes people share the gospel more like a numbers game than a relationship. It becomes all about how many people raised their hands or walked down an aisle—not about who those people are, what they’re going through, or how they’re growing.
But this isn’t a mass-production industry. This is the body of Christ. We’re not making converts to a club—we’re pointing people to a Savior.
That’s why there’s a difference between evangelists and pastors. Evangelists share the good news. Pastors care for the ones who believe it. They walk with people. They guide, support, protect, and nurture.
And while we all have a part to play in sharing Jesus, we’re not just looking for numbers—we’re looking for hearts.
Don’t Be Like the Legalists
The legalists were more focused on building their following than building the people.
Let’s not be like that.
Let’s care for people—not just “reach” them, but really see them. Let’s rejoice when someone believes, and then stick around to walk with them as they grow. Paul says it is “good always to be eagerly sought in a commendable manner“, or in other words, it is good when those who are born again are celebrated and cherished!
Because love doesn’t shut people out. It brings them in—and keeps them close.
