Here are some things to keep in mind the next time you go out to minister or help others:
- Operate in compassion, not sympathy. Compassion is love in action, not just an emotion. Be willing to take concrete steps to help meet people’s needs.
- Don’t just rely on your own human emotions or feelings. Tap into the compassion that comes from the Spirit and allows God’s power to flow through you. You have all the compassion that is needed to minister healing to that person. You may know what the person has done, but you are not there as judge. Remember, there is nothing that love cannot conquer.
- Be bold and uncompromising in your compassion. Don’t back down or water things down to be socially acceptable. Stand your ground, be yourself, which is Christ, and do not let social norms determine how you should behave. I remember when I used to post faith based messages during the pandemic season, I got a lot of flak and hatred. Does it sting? Yes. But, I remember one thing an RN said to me when she was giving vaccinations to my toddler. She said, I know its painful to see them cry, but I comfort myself knowing that I did something that is good for them.
- Be willing to minister to family members with the same spirit-led compassion as you would to strangers. Don’t let emotional attachments hinder the flow of God’s power. I know, it is hard, but stand on it. Don’t let emotions control you. Emotions shake the ground where you stand. Of course, it might be a tough time for your family, but stand on the Word.
- Recognize that compassion involves both a heart of love and a righteous anger towards the forces of darkness that are harming people. Allow both to motivate you to take action. Remember, every suffering is because of this evil that is prevalent. Be bold as a lion, and stand against it. You might say, oh no, I am not bold. Yes, you are! God is calling you a mighty warrior. Stand on the Word.
- Don’t judge or make assumptions about how people will use your help. Give generously and let God work in their lives. Remember, whatever people approached Jesus for, He didn’t deny. He never said “that’s too much”, or “you are going to use it for drugs”. But rather, we received freely though we didn’t deserve, and now freely give though they don’t deserve it.
Key Takeaway
The key is to walk in the compassion of the Spirit, not just human emotion or social norms. Be bold, be led by the Spirit, and be willing to take action to help others in need. This is the path to seeing God’s power manifested.
