What if Christ had died as a baby? Would His death alone have been enough to save us?
At first glance, we might think so. After all, His blood is infinitely valuable. But as Wayne Grudem points out in Systematic Theology (1994), if Jesus had only died young, we would not have the full salvation the Bible promises. We need not only His death, but also His life of perfect obedience.
1. Forgiveness Alone Is Not Enough
If Christ had died immediately after birth, His death might have brought forgiveness of sins. Our guilt could have been removed. But forgiveness alone would leave us in the same place as Adam and Eve before the fall — innocent, yet unproven.
They stood in fellowship with God, but their position was not secure. They still faced a “probation,” a call to perfect obedience. Only after obedience would their fellowship with God be established forever.
In the same way, if we only had forgiveness through Jesus’ death, we would be at zero: no guilt, but no righteousness either.
2. Christ’s Active and Passive Obedience
This is why Jesus’ whole life matters for our salvation. Theologians describe His obedience in two parts:
- Active obedience: Jesus lived in perfect obedience to God’s law every single day of His life. He did what Adam failed to do, fulfilling all righteousness on our behalf (Romans 5:19). His flawless record is credited to us through faith.
- Passive obedience: Jesus suffered and died, bearing the penalty of our sins. By His wounds, our guilt is removed and God’s justice is satisfied (Isaiah 53:5).
We need both. His death cancels our debt. His life fills our account with perfect righteousness.
3. More Than Pardon — Adoption
The gospel is not just about getting our slate wiped clean. It’s about being clothed in Christ’s righteousness and welcomed into God’s family.
Paul says in Philippians 3:9:
“That I may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own … but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.”
Because of Jesus’ life and death, we don’t just stand forgiven. We stand righteous. We don’t just avoid judgment; we enjoy adoption (Galatians 4:4–5).
4. Christ Secured the Blessings of the Law
Jesus said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (Matthew 5:17).
By living in perfect obedience to God’s law, Jesus didn’t just remain sinless — He fulfilled the law’s demands and secured its blessings. Where Israel broke the covenant and brought curses, Jesus kept it fully and brought blessings.
Because we are united with Him by faith:
- We are set free from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13).
- We inherit the blessings of the law (Galatians 3:14).
- Every promise of God finds its “Yes” in Him (2 Corinthians 1:20).
If Jesus had died before living a life of obedience, the blessings of God’s covenant would never have been secured for us. His perfect life guarantees not only pardon but also every spiritual blessing in Christ (Ephesians 1:3).
✅ Conclusion: He Lived for You and Died for You
If Jesus had only died, we might have forgiveness, but we would lack righteousness and blessing. Salvation would be incomplete. But because He lived a life of flawless obedience and died a sacrificial death, we are fully redeemed.
That means:
- His death removes your guilt.
- His life secures your righteousness.
- His obedience unlocks every blessing promised in God’s covenant.
So when you think of the gospel, remember this: Jesus didn’t just die for you — He lived for you too.
