The Law was Never the Solution; It was the ALARM

2–3 minutes

There’s nothing wrong with the Law itself. Scripture says it clearly:

“So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.”
(Romans 7:12)

The problem wasn’t the Law—it was the people under it.

“For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. But God found fault with the people…”
(Hebrews 8:7–8a)

Why? Because no one could keep it. And God never pretended otherwise.
Paul writes:

“For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.”
(Romans 2:13)

Any law keepers?

So how many people are true doers of the Law? Exactly zero.
That’s the point.

The Law wasn’t given to applaud Israel’s effort. It was given to shut every mouth and hold the entire world accountable before God (Romans 3:19). In other words, the Law was a mirror—not to fix us, but to show us how far off we really are.

Even the Pharisees—the experts in the Law—couldn’t keep it. Jesus said:

“Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.”
(Matthew 5:20)

Paul takes it even further in Romans 2:21–24, calling out their hypocrisy. These men taught others but failed to teach themselves. They preached against sin while secretly indulging in it. And as a result, God’s name was being blasphemedamong the Gentiles.

The Law, in the end, is a dead-end street. It doesn’t save us—it exposes us.
It shows us our addiction to sin, our inability to be righteous on our own. And that’s not a failure of the Law—it’s the design of it.

“Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law… So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith.”
(Galatians 3:23–25)

Being “held in custody” isn’t fun—but it’s exactly what the Law did. It locked us in, hemmed us in, until we could see our desperate need for rescue.

But now, faith has come.
Now, we’re no longer under the guardian.
The Law has done its job—it’s led us to Jesus.

And once you’re with Jesus, your relationship with the Law is over. You’re no longer in the jail cell. You’re free—not to sin, but to live in the Spirit, guided by grace, not rules.
That’s the Gospel.
