“They answered Him, ‘Abraham is our father.’
Jesus said to them, ‘If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham.’”
— John 8:39
When Jesus said these words, He shattered the religious pride of those who trusted in their ancestry. They were descendants of Abraham by blood — yet Jesus said they were not truly his children. Why? Because Abraham’s true children are those who share his faith, not merely his DNA.
1. Abraham’s Faith — The Defining Mark of His Children
Abraham’s greatness was not in his lineage, wealth, or position. It was his faith that set him apart. He believed God when there was no evidence to believe (Genesis 15:6).
So when Jesus stood before the Jewish leaders and they refused to believe, they revealed that they were Abraham’s descendants in flesh, but not in faith.
If they were truly his seed, they would have responded to Jesus the same way Abraham did — with trust, surrender, and obedience.
Instead, they rejected the very fulfillment of the promise Abraham longed to see (John 8:56).
2. Faith Alone Defines Israel
Paul makes this truth unmistakably clear:
“Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham.”
— Galatians 3:7
This means faith, not heritage, determines who belongs to Israel.
Even among Abraham’s physical descendants, not all were counted as children of promise:
“For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel…
It is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God,
but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.”
— Romans 9:6–8
So, when Jesus said, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would believe Me,” He was declaring that true Israel is defined by faith in Him — not by birth, not by the law, not by outward religion.
3. Christ — The True Seed of Abraham
Paul writes that the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his Seed, and that Seed is Christ (Gal. 3:16).
Therefore, all who are in Christ become Abraham’s true descendants and heirs of the promise (Gal. 3:29).
In other words, to belong to Christ is to belong to Israel — the spiritual Israel born of faith, not flesh.
Jesus is the living embodiment of Israel’s destiny, and those united with Him by faith are the people of God in whom every promise is fulfilled.
4. The Faith That Reflects the Father
Abraham’s children don’t just claim his name; they carry his faith.
They trust God’s word even when it challenges reason. They respond to His promises with surrender.
Faith, not ancestry, proves sonship.
That’s why Jesus could look at those who boasted of Abraham’s bloodline and say,
“You are doing the works of your father” —
and then name their true father: the one who opposed the truth (John 8:41–44).
Conclusion
If they were truly Abraham’s seed, they would have believed — because only those who are of the faith are Israel.
Faith in Christ is the dividing line between fleshly descent and spiritual sonship.
To be Abraham’s child is not to share his blood, but his belief.
To belong to Israel is not to be born into a nation, but into the promise — by faith in Christ, the true Seed.
