“And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper…”
(Romans 1:28–32, NASB)
The final verses of Romans 1 paint one of the most sobering pictures in all of Scripture. Paul describes a society that has pushed God out of its thoughts, and as a result, God “gave them over to a depraved mind.”
1. The Heart of the Problem: Refusing to Acknowledge God
At its core, the human heart resists God not because of a lack of evidence, but because of a desire for self-rule. Acknowledging God means acknowledging objective morality.
- If God exists, His Word defines right and wrong.
- But if we reject Him, morality becomes subjective.
This is why our culture loves slogans like:
- “Live your truth.”
- “Do whatever makes you happy.”
These sound liberating, but they reject the idea of any fixed, unchanging standard of right and wrong.
Yet, as Paul warns, when we choose to live by our own “truth”, we set ourselves on a downward spiral:
- Reject God → 2. Reject truth → 3. Embrace lies → 4. Fall into depravity
The mind that refuses to acknowledge God does not remain neutral. It decays.
2. The Spiral Into Depravity
Paul doesn’t leave this concept abstract. He lists the fruits of a God-rejecting mind:
- Inner corruption: greed, malice, envy, deceit
- Social destruction: gossip, slander, strife, disobedience to parents
- Pride and rebellion: arrogance, boasting, inventing new forms of evil
- Loss of humanity: untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful
And then Paul adds a chilling conclusion:
“They not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.” (v.32)
The final stage of rebellion is not just sinning, but celebrating sin—calling evil good, and applauding it.
3. A Mirror for Modern Culture
Paul’s words are not just an ancient warning; they perfectly describe the moral trajectory of modern Western culture.
- First, society rejected God’s moral authority.
- Then, it celebrated behaviors Scripture calls sin: same-sex relationships, gender confusion, and a rejection of God’s created order.
- Now, fringe movements push to normalize even darker behaviors like pedophilia—once unthinkable.
This is the cultural decay of Romans 1 in real time. When God is removed, there is no moral anchor. Every boundary falls.
4. The Only Way Back: God’s Objective Morality
The antidote to cultural and personal decay is not more self-discovery, but returning to God’s truth. His Word is the only objective moral compass that can:
- Anchor our hearts against deception
- Protect society from moral collapse
- Transform depraved minds into renewed ones
As Paul later urges in Romans 12:2:
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
If we want to escape the spiral of sin—both personally and as a culture—we must return to the God we’ve tried to forget. Only His truth can break the cycle of deception and moral decay.
Reflection Questions for Readers
- Are there areas in my life where I am ignoring God’s truth to follow “my truth”?
- Do I approve of or celebrate what God calls sin, even subtly?
- How can I renew my mind in God’s Word this week instead of being shaped by the culture?
