We Are Presented Without Blame

4–6 minutes

I used to run this prayer group where there was this woman who was really serious about her faith. She opened up about feeling like she wasn’t good enough for God. She really wanted to make Him happy, but she felt like she wasn’t living up to His standards. I tried telling her that she was already righteous in Christ and that God was happy with her, but she kept pointing to this below verse.

Ephesians 1:4: “Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.”

She saw it as a sign that she had to always work hard to be a good and blameless person.

This raises a crucial question for all of us: Are we truly blameless before God, or is this something we must achieve through our efforts? Let’s explore what the Bible says about being blameless in Christ.

  1. Christ has made us blameless
  2. Our Blamelessness Is Rooted in Faith, Not Works
  3. Proving our Blamelessness to the World
  4. God establishes us blameless
  5. Standing Blameless before Him
  6. Conclusion: Live out your blameless identity in Christ

Christ has made us blameless

The Bible clearly teaches that Christ has already accomplished our sanctification and blamelessness through His sacrifice.

Consider the following verse:

Ephesians 5:25-27: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.

Who gave Himself? Christ.

Who was to sanctify? Christ.

Who was to cleanse? Christ

Who was to present to Himself in all her glory holy (or sanctified) and blameless? It’s Christ again.

It’s Christ’s responsibility to present the bride holy and blameless.

Also, in the context, if. The bride is not required to strive for flawlessness, as only our groom, Christ, can achieve that, and indeed he has.

When? – when He gave himself for us, that He might sanctify the Church—His bride—and present her blameless.

The passage makes it clear that it is Christ who sanctifies us, not our own efforts. Christ completed His task; therefore, we are now without spot, wrinkle, or blame in God’s sight.

Our Blamelessness Is Rooted in Faith, Not Works

Colossians 1:22-23 further reinforces this truth:

“Yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach—if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel

Here, Paul explains that our blamelessness before God is grounded in our faith, not in our ability to follow a set of rules. The key is to remain steadfast in the faith and in the hope of the gospel. It’s not about trying to earn blamelessness through our actions but about standing firm in the truth of what Christ has already done.

Proving our Blamelessness to the World

Philippians 2:14-15 says,

“Do all things without grumbling or disputing; so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world.”

This verse emphasizes that our actions can demonstrate our blamelessness to the world, but it does not suggest that our actions create or determine our blamelessness. This is a general principle that we saw even in sanctification– that we are sanctified perfectly and completely in the spirit, and we are to live out the sanctification to the natural.

If our blamelessness depended on our behaviour, Paul would have said, “Do all things without grumbling so that you will become blameless.” Instead, the verse indicates that our behaviour reflects the blameless state we already possess in Christ.

God establishes us blameless

In 1 Thessalonians 3:12-13, Paul writes,

“And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you, so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints.”

Some might interpret this to mean that we must work harder to become more holy and blameless. However, the text clearly states that it is the Lord who establishes our hearts as blameless. This is a work of God, not something we achieve by our own strength. He sets our hearts in the right place, firm and secure in His holiness.

Standing Blameless before Him

Jude 24 offers further assurance:

“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy…

This verse reinforces the idea that it is God who makes us stand blameless in His presence. Our role is not to perform spiritual feats to achieve blamelessness but to trust in the One who has already made us blameless through His grace.

Conclusion: Live out your blameless identity in Christ

Know this: You are holy, sanctified, and blameless before God. The Bible tells us that as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our sins from us—past, present, and future.

Romans 8:33-34 reminds us,

“Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.”

Therefore, live out your blameless identity in the natural realm. Embrace the freedom and liberty that come from knowing you are blameless in Christ. It’s not about striving to be something you’re not; it’s about living in the reality of who you already are in Him.
